Inspiration
Mental health support often feels transactional. You talk, the app responds, and then it forgets you. Roa Therapist was inspired by the idea that healing needs continuity. We wanted to build something that feels present, remembers your journey, and grows alongside you instead of resetting every time you open the app.
What it does
Roa Therapist is a personal AI mental health companion that listens, remembers, and adapts over time. Users can save notes, thoughts, and tasks inside the app, and the AI reads these notes before every conversation. It remembers everything you share, even after the app is closed, allowing conversations to feel ongoing, personal, and meaningful. All data stays private on the user’s device.
How we built it
We built Roa Therapist using React and TypeScript with Ionic React and Capacitor to support Android, iOS, and web from a single codebase. The AI is powered by Google Gemini and connected through a custom local memory system that reloads past conversations and notes before every message. The interface focuses on calm visuals, smooth animations, and a therapeutic experience.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was creating real memory without using cloud storage. We had to design a system that could store, retrieve, and summarize notes and conversations locally while keeping responses fast and relevant. Balancing privacy, performance, and emotional accuracy required constant iteration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built an AI that genuinely remembers the user. The note based memory system makes conversations feel continuous and personal. Achieving persistent memory across sessions while keeping everything private and offline is something we are especially proud of.
What we learned
We learned that emotional AI is not about smarter responses, but about better memory and trust. When an AI remembers what matters to you, conversations become more meaningful. We also learned how important calm design and tone are when building for mental health.
What's next for Roa Therapist
Next, we plan to add mood tracking, journaling insights, and deeper emotional context awareness. Our goal is to make Roa Therapist feel even more like a long term companion that understands you better with time, while staying completely private and user first.
