Inspiration

RLLR's inception can be traced back to a personal journey of our project lead, Ben Schiller. It all began when Ben bought his first Bitcoin, an experience that ignited his curiosity about the very essence of money. For the first time, he found himself pondering, "What Is Money?"

As he ventured further into the world of cryptocurrencies and DeFi, the rollercoaster ride of ups and downs prompted another fundamental question, "How Do We Create, Keep, and Grow Wealth?" These questions eventually led him to explore the world of real estate, where the tried-and-true cash flow plus appreciation model reigns supreme.

Ben's realization that this model could be translated into the virtual realm using Bitcoin DeFi became the driving force behind RLLR. Inspired by the rapid evolution of Bitcoin and the burgeoning virtual asset landscape, the project team recognized the need for cooperative incentives and a financial model that would maximize the potential of digital assets while providing stability and leverage.

This personal journey laid the foundation for RLLR as a Collaborative Finance solution, poised to revolutionize how real wealth is built in the virtual realm.

What it does

RLLR, short for Real Liquid Leveraged Returns, is a groundbreaking Collaborative Finance protocol that leverages Bitcoin DeFi to reshape the virtual asset landscape. It addresses several critical challenges:

  • Maximize Asset Growth: RLLR allows users to increase the potential of their digital assets by creating asset pools that promote synergy between cryptocurrencies, digital items, and more. This cooperative approach mitigates the risk of impermanent loss.

  • Market Volatility and Stability: By enabling any bitcoin-related asset to act as either principal or yield, RLLR offers users flexibility to hedge against market volatility while encouraging cross-community cooperation. This enhances stability in a dynamic market.

  • Limited Leverage and Maximizing Returns: RLLR introduces popular features like leveraged yield farming, lending, and liquidity mining to amplify returns while responsibly managing risk. It empowers users to leverage otherwise dormant holdings effectively and achieve portfolio growth.

Use Case: Collaborative Finance with #bitmap and SatBoys

One of the prominent applications of RLLR is showcased in the collaboration between SatBoys, a captivating collection of 3D recursive ordinal inscriptions, and bitmap, a bustling virtual world built on Bitcoin. The app allows users to stake bitmap land tokens as the principal asset within the RLLR ecosystem, earning SatBoys as yield.

This collaboration not only benefits bitmap holders by adding value to their individual virtual portfolios while expanding the bitmap narrative universe but also empowers SatBoys by exposing them to an engaged community and bootstrapping their launch.

The integration of bitmap, SatBoys, and the innovative opportunities offered by RLLR is just one example of the coming Collaborative Finance revolution.

How we built it

We embarked on this journey with the aspiration to build upon the pioneering work of OnChainMonkey, who introduced the world to the concept of recursive 3D ordinal collections. Our aim was to push the boundaries even further by using GLTF files as layers of character traits. GLTF (Graphics Library Transmission Format) is an open-standard file format used to store and exchange 3D graphics and scenes, opening the door to greater complexity and artistic richness.

The RLLR backend was built using Deep Lake, a suite of APIs designed to interact with powerful Bitcoin primitives, including discrete log contracts (DLCs) and partially-signed bitcoin transactions (PSBTs). These APIs served as the foundation for creating dynamic solutions grounded in the well-established economic model of cash flow plus appreciation.

The development process involved collaborative efforts from a diverse team of specialists. The goal was to create a protocol that not only addresses the challenges of virtual asset utilization but also encourages broad-based coordination across communities.

Challenges we ran into

During the development of RLLR, the team encountered several challenges, including:

  • Complexity of Bitcoin DeFi: Integrating Bitcoin DeFi primitives like DLCs and PSBTs into the protocol required a deep understanding of blockchain technology and complex cryptographic concepts.

  • Cooperative Coordination: With current negative market conditions, encouraging cross-community engagement among various stakeholders in the virtual asset space presented challenges to building a Collaborative Finance ecosystem.

  • Inscription Fees: While this cooperative use case would benefit both bitmap land token holders and SatBoys, a persistent challenge was optimizing our approach to recursive 3D. To enhance efficiency and minimize fees, making the 3D traits smaller by first inscribing the Graco 3D compression library would be an absolute necessity and a significant improvement in quality and cost.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Several accomplishments stand out as sources of pride for the RLLR team:

  • Innovative Protocol: RLLR represents an innovative approach to virtual asset finance, leveraging Bitcoin DeFi and cooperative principles to offer solutions that address real-world challenges.

  • Metaverse Integration: The successful integration of RLLR into the metaverse, connecting bitmap and SatBoys, showcases the protocol's versatility and potential for real-world applications.

  • Community Engagement: After conducting over 50 user interviews, it is clear that it is possible to build a vibrant and engaged community around RLLR leading to the project's rapid growth and user adoption.

What we learned

Throughout the development of RLLR, the team learned valuable lessons about the intersection of blockchain, finance, and virtual assets. These lessons include:

  • Cooperation is Key: In the virtual asset space, cooperative incentives play a vital role in user engagement and the success of financial protocols.

  • Innovation Drives Adoption: Innovative features and use cases, such as the metaverse integration, can drive adoption and interest in blockchain projects.

  • Security is Paramount: Security should always be a top priority, especially in DeFi projects. Rigorous testing and audits are essential to ensuring the safety of user assets.

What's next for RLLR - Real Liquid Leveraged Assets

The future for RLLR holds exciting possibilities. The project aims to continue expanding its ecosystem, exploring new cooperative use cases, and integrating with emerging virtual asset platforms. Additionally, RLLR plans to enhance user engagement and accessibility, making the protocol even more user-friendly. As blockchain and virtual assets continue to evolve, RLLR is well-positioned to lead the way in collaborative finance for the virtual realm.
