RivalScope

Inspiration

The inspiration for RivalScope came from a critical pain point experienced by startups, product teams, and sales organizations: the lack of real-time, citation-backed competitive intelligence. Traditional competitive analysis is often:

• Time-consuming: Manual research takes hours or days
• Outdated: Static reports become stale quickly
• Unreliable: Information lacks proper citations and sources
• Inconsistent: Ad-hoc research leads to gaps in coverage

We envisioned a world where teams could go from "zero to insight" in seconds, with every data point backed by real-time sources. The goal was to democratize competitive intelligence for resource-constrained startups who can't afford expensive market research tools or budding entrepreneurs who just want to validate their ideas by checking out similar companies in the domain.

What it does

RivalScope is a comprehensive competitive intelligence platform that provides:

1. Automated Competitor Discovery: Simply input your company name and URL, and RivalScope uses Perplexity Sonar to identify your top 5 competitors based on web presence

2. Real-time Feature & Funding Analysis:

   • Side-by-side feature comparison matrices with citations
   • Latest funding rounds and investment data
   • Contextual analysis that explains why these companies are competitors

3. Deep Competitive Intelligence:

   • 1v1 detailed analysis using Sonar Deep Research
   • Product comparison insights
   • Pricing strategy analysis
   • Sales battlecard generation
   • User preference insights

4. Automated Weekly Digest:

   • Scheduled weekly emails with competitive updates that occured in the past week including recent developments, key insights with proper sources for all competitors

How we built it

Backend (Python + FastAPI):

• API Framework: FastAPI with async support for high performance
• AI Integration: Perplexity Sonar API (sonar-pro and sonar-deep-research models) for competitive intelligence and deep research
• Database: PostgreSQL
• Scheduling: APScheduler for automated weekly digest cron jobs
• Email Service: SMTP integration for digest delivery

Frontend (React + Vite):

• Framework: Modern React with Vite for fast development

Key Architectural Decisions:

1. Service-Oriented Design: Separated concerns with dedicated service classes for feature extraction, funding analysis, and detailed competitive research
2. Rate-Limit Compliant: Implemented 5 requests/minute compliance for sonar-deep-research model with intelligent batching
3. Contextual Analysis: Dynamic prompts that adapt based on user company context

Challenges we ran into

1. API Rate Limiting: Perplexity Sonar's 5 requests/minute limit required sophisticated batching and scheduling logic
2. Contextual Intelligence: Making the AI understand competitive relationships rather than just generic company information
3. Retry Mechanism: Implementing retry mechanism and graceful fallbacks when Sonar APIs return unexpected results

5. Prompt Engineering: The quality of AI analysis is heavily dependent on well-crafted, contextual prompts

What's next for RivalScope

1. Idea Validation: Enable budding entrepreneurs to validate their startup concepts by simply describing their idea in text. The platform will automatically discover companies operating in similar domains, analyze their features and market positioning, identify gaps and opportunities for differentiation, and provide actionable insights on how to position the new venture uniquely in the competitive landscape

3. Enhanced Battlecard Creator: One-click PDF/Markdown export for sales teams
