Ready Rita: Voice Helpers for Everyone
Inspiration
The inspiration for Ready Rita came from watching a small museum struggle with their recruiting process. Their technicians were spending over 20 hours per month on phone screens for entry-level positions, taking them away from their core responsibilities. When they looked into solutions, they found that professional recruiting services cost upwards of $4,000 monthly—completely out of reach for their budget. Meanwhile, existing voice technology seemed locked behind complex APIs and developer documentation. We realized there was a massive gap between what small businesses need and what's available to them without technical expertise.
What it does
Ready Rita makes it incredibly simple for small businesses to create professional voice helpers without any coding skills. In less than five minutes, a business owner can set up a fully functional voice assistant with a dedicated phone number. Our initial focus is on recruitment screening, where Rita can ask candidates pre-defined questions, record their responses, and send detailed summaries to the business owner. This saves hours of time while ensuring every candidate gets a consistent, professional experience. The system handles everything from answering calls to natural conversation flow—all customizable through a simple, wizard-style interface.
How we built it
We built Ready Rita with simplicity as our north star. We started by identifying common use cases for voice technology in small businesses, with initial focus on recruitment screening. We created templates with industry-specific questions that could be easily customized through a simple interface. On the technical side, we abstracted away the complexity of voice APIs, conversation design, and natural language processing behind a straightforward setup process. T
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was striking the right balance between simplicity and functionality. Early prototypes either offered too many options (overwhelming users) or too few (limiting usefulness). We solved this by creating smart templates that contain best practices while allowing customization at key points. Another major challenge was creating a natural-sounding voice experience without requiring users to understand conversation design. We also struggled with finding the right branding approach that would make voice technology feel approachable rather than intimidating for small business owners.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're most proud of creating a solution that can be set up in minutes instead of months. We're also proud of the natural conversation quality we've achieved, with candidates often unaware they're speaking with an automated system. Finally, we're proud of creating a solution that delivers enterprise-level capabilities at a price point accessible to even the smallest businesses.
What we learned
Throughout this hackathon, we learned that voice technology isn't inherently complex—it's the implementation that creates barriers. Small business owners don't think in terms of "agents" or "AI"; they think about solving specific problems like "screening job candidates" or "answering common customer questions." By focusing on use cases rather than technology, we could create something truly accessible. We also discovered that small businesses are willing to adopt advanced technology when it's presented in familiar terms and solves a clear pain point.
What's next for Ready Rita
We'd like to expand Ready Rita beyond recruitment into other common small business use cases, including customer FAQs, appointment scheduling, and basic customer service. We'll continue refining our templates based on user feedback and industry best practices. Long term, we envision Ready Rita becoming the go-to platform for small business voice automation, just as platforms like Mailchimp became essential for email marketing.
