We were inspired by apps like Waze, Foursquare, and Citizen that allows users to check in and provide status updates about public places. We combined this with our knowledge of other less successful methods of contact tracing and our user research that showed that users are looking for a product to help them avoid exposure to COVID-19.
What it does
Lets users "raise a flag" for hotspots of disease transmission (like crowding and no-mask wearing) that dynamically arise, to warn other users in real time. This allows users to perform a risk analysis before going into public places.
How we built it
Figma, programming and prototyping, talking with engineers
Challenges we ran into
Programming difficulty and the need for extensive research to test the idea
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A solution that works for everyone!
What we learned
Complete and imperfect beats incomplete and non-existent, and that it's important to find a solution that works for everyone
What's next for Defender
In the future, we would like to include information to help users locate where to get vaccines/testing, more social features (such as earning achievements for submitting reports), and location-specific tips to limit exposure to COVID-19.
