Inspiration
We were inspired to create a time trial by the short green star levels in Super Mario 3D World and the Cyber Space stages in Sonic Frontiers.
Description of the game
Rising Tide is a time trial game that grants the player a very short amount of time to complete each level. The game has a lava-themed first level and an ice-themed second level. The player will need to avoid obstacles such as meteors falling from the sky, moving platforms, disappearing staircases, and spinning rods. At the end of each level, a boss attempts to thwart the player's progress. Defeating a boss grants the player the ability to resume from a checkpoint if they die later on. It also grants the player additional time. The player has basic controls, such as WASD to move, space bar to jump, and left-click for a melee attack. Attacking a boss only works within close range.
How we built it
We used Roblox Studio to develop Rising Tide. We used some third-party assets for artistic purposes and created our own assets as well. We used both Scripts and LocalScripts to manage events and logic within the game.
Challenges we ran into
Programming the movement of certain objects and the behavior of the bosses was a challenge. We needed to figure out a good way for the player to deal damage to the bosses while in range. We also faced challenges making sure the player passed through the invisible wall stages that start the timer and mark the beginning of a new level. We used advanced coding practices to ensure that the timer works properly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to create a two-level game within a couple hours, something we couldn't have possibly done in Unity or Unreal Engine (or if we coded the game engine from scratch!) We are also proud to have a fully completed level that is ready to be played and leads to very funny and enjoyable moments.
What we learned
Division of labor is important. Each member of our group had a unique skillset. Dividing up tasks appropriately among each team member meant that each group member could contribute according to their strengths, and was of utmost importance to ensure that our project was completed by the deadline.
What's next for Rising Tide
We could add more levels and move beyond the fire-ice dichotomy in Rising Tide. We could also have the player level up and learn skills to complete the levels quicker.
