Inspiration

Our project focuses on providing homeless individuals with the tools and resources they need to secure gainful employment. We understand that one of the biggest barriers to overcoming homelessness is a lack of stable income, which is why we prioritize job placement assistance. Our program offers job search support, resume building assistance, and interview coaching to help our clients stand out to potential employers. Our project aims to assist homeless individuals located around Lansing , on finding employment opportunities and building their professional profiles.

What it does

We provide job search resources, resume building tools, and interview preparation assistance to help our clients secure stable employment and improve their chances of success in the job market. Additionally, our program offers support services such as housing assistance and life skills training to help our clients adjust to their new lives and become self-sufficient.

How we built it

We built a website called "Rise Up" to match homeless people seeking jobs with specific job types would involve several steps: We conducted research to understand the needs of homeless people seeking jobs and the demands of specific job types such as pet sitter, restaurant host, phlebotomists etc. Regarding the design of the website, our aim was to creater a user-friendly design for the website that is easy to navigate and comprehend.

Challenges we ran into

Developing a simple website using HTML can be challenging because it requires a good understanding of web development basics such as HTML tags, CSS styling, and JavaScript programming. Additionally, creating a website that is based on a specific database, such as the Lansing area database, adds an additional layer of complexity because it requires knowledge of how to connect to and query the database to retrieve and display the relevant information. This was slightly challenging because it required knowledge of database management and web development principles. Through teamwork we all managed to insert our knowledge and build something that a local homeless job seeker would find easy to navigate.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we are helping the homeless community in Lansing by providing them with information and resources that can aid in their search for housing and other essential services. By developing a website that is based on the Lansing area database, we are making it easier for the homeless community to access information about available resources, such as shelters and emergency services. Additionally, by providing this information in a clear and easy-to-use format, we are helping to empower the homeless community to take control of their situation and improve their circumstances. Overall, we are proud to be making a positive change for a good social cause.

What we learned

We learned how essential teamwork and collaboration is. We were all open to learn from each other and exchange our coding skills in order to accomplish our project.

What's next for RiseUp

Building a database within the Lansing location to store information about homeless job seekers, including their skills. Developing an algorithm that can match job seekers with job openings based on their skills and qualifications.
