Inspiration

Fitness apps live on phones and rarely centre women coaches, even though women drive most at-home workouts — often with family around. The TV is the household's shared screen. We built the coach that belongs on it.

What it does

RISE TV is a Fire TV (Vega OS / Fire OS) app with 14 women-led sessions across Dance, Strength, Yoga, Soccer Skills and Family Workout. Pose Check uses computer vision (skeleton overlay, joint angles, live form score) to coach your form in real time, privately on-device. The AI Coach turns mood + energy + minutes into one perfect session via Amazon Bedrock. Everything works by remote, voice (Alexa+ MCP server, Streamable HTTP), or touch. The player adds chapters, live form cues, easier/harder branches, and an AI Recap.

How we built it

A zero-build 10-foot web demo nails the TV UX first — spatial D-pad focus with visible ring/scale, drawer nav, hero, poster grid — and serves as the living spec for the React Native TV / Vega app, modelled on Amazon's react-native-multi-tv-app-sample. A Python FastMCP server exposes recommend / pose-tip / log-workout / family-plan tools over Streamable HTTP for Alexa+. The AI Coach calls Bedrock's Converse API (Nova Lite by default) with a deterministic local fallback so it demos with zero credentials. One catalog powers TV, voice, and coach — no drift.

Challenges we ran into

TV focus is unforgiving: a single lost-focus bug strands a remote user. We built a geometry-based spatial navigator and tested every screen keyboard-only. Making AI features demo reliably without AWS credentials led to the fallback-first design — Bedrock in production, identical rule-based logic offline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A demo anyone can run in 30 seconds that hits all six Fire TV priority categories; a working MCP tool surface sharing the TV catalog; Pose Check tips that feel live; and a genuinely women-led catalog — including a 9-year-old co-coach and a 68-year-old mobility coach.

What we learned

10-foot design is a discipline: type size, contrast, and focus states are the product. MCP's Streamable HTTP makes TV + voice feel like one system, and Bedrock's Converse API makes model choice a config line, not a rewrite.

What's next

Native Vega build with W3C Media player, on-device pose model, Bedrock AgentCore hosting for the MCP server, DynamoDB streaks, and real women creators publishing sessions to RISE TV.
