Inspiration
The Mauryan Empire isn’t just a chapter in history — it’s an epic of transformation, intrigue, and philosophy. We were inspired by how a humble youth, Chandragupta Maurya, overthrew an oppressive dynasty with the guidance of a brilliant strategist, Kautilya (also known as Chanakya). This journey — from rebellion to a vast empire, and eventually to Ashoka’s moral and spiritual awakening — deeply resonated with us. We felt compelled to bring these stories to life, to make them accessible through modern design and interactivity.
What it does
"Rise of Magadh: A Mauryan Epic" is an interactive website that guides users through the birth, rise, and legacy of the Mauryan Empire. Through scroll-triggered storytelling, animated timelines, character-driven narratives, and embedded historical sources, it helps users explore:
- The strategic mind of Chanakya
- The revolutionary rise of Chandragupta Maurya
- The moral transformation of Ashoka after the Kalinga War
- The philosophies and edicts that influenced Asia for centuries
How we built it
We began by researching extensively from academic sources and translated scriptures. Then we created a narrative structure divided into thematic chapters. The site was built using:
- React for dynamic components
- Tailwind CSS for responsive and elegant design
- Framer Motion for smooth scroll-based animations
- Vercel for deployment
We also used LottieFiles for micro-interactions and animated elements, ensuring that each historical beat had visual depth.
Challenges we ran into
- Finding accurate and consistent historical information was tough, as ancient records often conflict.
- Creating a narrative that was both educational and emotionally compelling was a balancing act.
- Implementing scroll-based transitions and synchronising them with content was technically complex.
- Designing for accessibility and performance while using animation-heavy components was another challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We turned dense historical material into an engaging and digestible experience.
- We created a visually rich, responsive website that performs well across devices.
- Our timeline and Dharma Edicts interaction sections were particularly well received during peer reviews.
- We collaborated across roles — research, design, and development — in true harmony.
What we learned
- How to break down complex narratives into interactive, web-friendly formats.
- Practical skills in React, animation libraries, and frontend deployment.
- The importance of user-centered storytelling in historical content.
- That history, when told right, can move hearts, not just inform minds.
What's next for Rise of Magadh: A Mauryan Epic
We plan to expand the site with:
- Voice narration of Ashoka’s edicts
- An interactive map tracing the spread of Buddhism post-Ashoka
- A mini-game simulating Chanakya’s strategic choices
- Translations in regional Indian languages
We want this to be not just a project, but a growing digital archive of India’s philosophical and political past — built for the curious minds of the future.
