Inspiration

This project was inspired by the anime series Attack on Titan and Solo Leveling. I was drawn to the tension, danger, ranking systems, and constant growth in both stories. That inspired me to think: what if productivity did not feel boring, but instead felt like a mission where every completed task helped protect something important? That idea became "Rise Behind the Walls" — a gamified productivity app where your daily tasks become quests, your progress earns XP and ranks, and your consistency helps defend a city from danger.

What it does

Rise Behind the Walls turns normal daily responsibilities into an immersive quest system. Users log in as a hunter, add tasks as quests, assign them to districts, and complete them to earn XP. As the player gains experience, they rank up and strengthen the city. The city is divided into multiple districts, and each district has its own health and condition. If tasks are ignored, the threat level rises, the city becomes more unstable. The wall defense section visually represents the city’s safety, making the user feel like their real-life productivity directly affects the survival of the world inside the app.

How we built it

I built the project using Python and Flask for the backend, and HTML and CSS for the frontend. Flask handled the application logic, including user flow, quests, XP, ranks, and changing city conditions. The frontend was styled to match the dark, intense atmosphere of the anime inspiration, with a titan background image, themed interface panels, and a wall-defense centerpiece. I designed the app around a few main systems:

  • a hunter login and profile
  • a quest system with different difficulty levels
  • XP and rank progression
  • district health and city status
  • wall defense visuals that reflect danger and pressure

Challenges I ran into

One of the biggest challenges was making the app feel both functional and immersive. I did not want it to be just another task manager, but we also needed the interface to stay clear and usable. Balancing the anime-inspired style with practical usability took a lot of iteration. We also faced frontend challenges, especially with page layout, CSS styling, image sizing, and positioning the titan background correctly.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

I am proud that I created a productivity app with a strong visual identity and story. Instead of simply listing tasks, I built a system that makes productivity feel urgent, rewarding, and interactive. The anime-inspired theme gave the project personality, while the quest and rank mechanics made it engaging. I am also proud of the overall atmosphere of the app. The titan background, district system, wall defense section, and hunter progression all work together to create a unique experience.

What I learned

I learned how to combine backend logic with themed frontend design to create a more engaging application. I also learned that storytelling can make even simple tools feel much more memorable. Through this project, we improved our skills in Flask, HTML, CSS, UI design, debugging, and structuring a project from idea to implementation.

What's next for Rise Behind the Walls

In the future, I want to make the wall more dynamic by showing visible cracks as the threat level increases. I also want to add more animations, persistent save data, better user progression, and special game events that make the city feel even more alive.
