Inspiration
The idea for Rise Above was born out of my journey of leaving my previous job to pursue my dream of starting my own company and being financially independent. As I reflected on how to build better habits to achieve my goals, the concept of Rise Above emerged, aiming to help others set and achieve their goals through structured guidance and support.
What it does
Rise Above is an app designed to help users set goals, build and track habits, and receive personalized guidance from an AI coach. It provides tools for efficient goal management, habit development, and daily motivational insights.
How we built it
The app was built using Swift and SwiftUI. I tried to use the latest technologies as also a way to learn them, an example of that is using SwiftData instead of CoreData. The development process involved integrating the AI coaching, designing a robust goal-setting framework, and ensuring the app’s compliance with App Store guidelines.
Challenges we ran into
Since this was the first app I released internationally, there was a lot of anxiety involved. I had and still have many ideas on how to make it better, but I needed to reduce the scope to be able to release an MVP. Finding this balance was and is challenging up to nowadays.
Another big challenge is diving into design without experience. I know there's a lot to learn and improve there. But creating a passable design isn't that easy if you don't have the skills upfront.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The release itself! It felt like reaching a great personal milestone. But I don't want to stop there. I have a few other app ideas that I want to work on while I collect feedback and iterate on ASO on the Rise Above project.
What we learned
That I have a lot to learn!! I have to say that, for at least the ideas that I have in my mind, I feel technically prepared to working and finishing them, but marketing and designing my apps is a great challenge for me and I'll focus on improving these skills in the coming months.
I came across the #buildInPublic hashtag, but I still need to be able to properly use it since I'm not that active on X (former Twitter). Also, I believe blogging about my path toward my goals could be a great idea.
What's next for Rise Above: Reach your Goals
First, I want to integrate a few app extensions such as "App Intents" and "Interactive Widgets". Second, some cosmetic changes such as supporting light mode and iPad/MacOS. Lastly, and that would be going on for a long, is improving the app based on feedback, integrating and automating the habit tracking feature itself, for example, integrating HealthKit into the app.
