Inspiration

After attending the GIC Economics Experience, we learnt how investors prioritise companies' involvement in carbon-reducing efforts. This insight sparked the idea for our platform. With 85% of investors prioritizing ESG factors and a global push for sustainability, we saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between companies and investors by leveraging blockchain technology for immutability and transparency.

What it does

RipplEffect is a dual blockchain-powered platform that simplifies carbon emissions reporting for companies and provides investors with real-time ESG metrics to make more informed, data-driven decisions. Companies can calculate carbon tax, declare emissions, and track progress toward sustainability goals, while investors can access tools like comparison tables, visualised trends, and leaderboards to assess corporate sustainability efforts transparently.

How we built it

  1. Concept Development: We were Inspired by insights from the GIC Economics Experience, and ideated RipplEffect to solve the transparency gap in carbon emissions reporting.
  2. Design Phase: We utilised PowerPoint to visualise the platform’s key features. Using tools like dropdown menus, interactive buttons, and simulated visuals, we designed a mock website interface to demonstrate how the platform would function. Visuals and charts were integrated to enhance credibility and provide a realistic representation of the user experience.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Technical Expertise: As a beginner team, understanding and implementing blockchain technology posed significant challenges as it is a topic we did not learn in school. We also lacked coding expertise & knowledge so we had to adapt and present our platform in a different way, through PowerPoint.
  2. Time Management: Balancing research, design, and development within the project timeline required meticulous planning, especially since we created the website interface from scratch using PowerPoint, which was a tedious process.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although we have no prior knowledge in coding and were unable to produce a prototype through coding, we still successfully simulated a functional platform using PowerPoint and features like dropdown menus, charts, and comparison tables for a realistic experience. We also conceptualised the use of dual blockchain integration: XRPL and the EVM Sidechain for tokenising carbon credits and dynamic calculations, making our solution stand out from single blockchain solutions. We also developed a solution that addresses critical issues like greenwashing and the transparency gap in carbon emissions reporting. We also created RipplEffect with the UN Sustainable Development Goals in mind and this platform fufills the goals by promoting responsible environmental practices through verifiable carbon reporting, addressing the critical need for Security & Transparency.

What we learned

Throughout this journey, we gained a deeper understanding of carbon markets, blockchain technologies like XRPL and EVM Sidechain, and API integration and learned how to align technology with investor priorities to promote sustainable practices effectively. We also understood the importance of teamwork as this project required us to effectively communicate with each other as a team so that things would be done more efficiently and that we would be able to complete the project smoothly and on time.

What's next for RipplEffect

  1. Prototype Development: Transition from PowerPoint website interface design to building a fully functional prototype using front-end tools (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and integrating APIs.
  2. Blockchain Implementation: Incorporate Ripple's XRPL for carbon credit tokenisation and the EVM Sidechain for smart contract functionality.
  3. Marketing and Outreach: Launch a marketing campaign targeting companies with sustainable practices and ESG investors. We will leverage social media, industry events, and partnerships with sustainability organisations, including NGOs to promote RipplEffect as a trusted solution.
  4. Partnerships and Pilot Testing: Collaborate with companies and investors to refine features and test the platform in real-world scenarios.
  5. Expansion: Scale the platform to include global carbon markets, renewable energy certificates, and biodiversity credits to cater to broader sustainability needs.
