Inspiration

Watching grocery stores, restaurants and colleges throw away an obscene amount of food. Watching ixo's presentation to discover that tokenization could be the missing link.

What it does

RIPE is a food rescue impact token. 133 Billion pounds of perishable food goes uneaten in the US every year, yet we still have “food deserts” in low-income areas where people don’t have access to grocery stores at all. This causes under-served communities to have higher rates of obesity and diet related conditions due to fast food and convenience food being their only option. Organizations like The Denver Food rescue, and We Don’t Waste already exist to redistribute excess food from grocery stores to these lower income areas. This contributes to 7 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, but progress towards these goals needs to be tracked. RIPE is a mechanism that tokenizes this redistribution to make scaling these operations more viable, and easier to track.

How we built it

Quickly

Challenges we ran into

We ran out of time integrating the smart contract (we're new with solidity) with the app so it's just a semi-functional skeleton at the moment.

What's next for RIPE - Food Rescue Impact Token

We're very connected in the food justice scene so we plan on introducing the app to food rescue organizations around Colorado.
