Inspiration
Ice hockey is nice hockey: except when the Canucks lose for the 9th time. It brings Canadians together; a special part of watching ice hockey, or just sports in general, is the commentary. It gives the game some passion, sound, and feeling that can reach the homes of many across the country. However, minor leagues and amatuer hockey players do not get the luxury that is commentary on their matches often. We thought, "What if you could add commentary to any hockey match?"
What it does
StormPucks takes an MP4 of a hockey match, uploaded by the user, is analyzed and given commentary to with AI and an audio model commentates over the match, bringing the power of commentary to any hockey match you want!
How we built it
We delegated tasks among our teams to tackle different parts of the project: people to work on the analyzing and interpreting of the data, incorporation and tweaking, and the frontend, where the user first experiences the software.
Challenges we ran into
The actual analytics of the data was complicated as the software would often think that certain players just disappeared . It took a lot of time to get the tracking right. The audio model had a few dependency issues, but when those were sorted out, the API suddenly stopped working for some reason. After some searching, we managed to find the solution to the issue. Other than these, the main issues were to get everything to work together smoothly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a fun, yet interesting project that was just out of our skill-level, forcing us to grow in the process of this event. Also, learning so many new skills was very useful and helpful for us.
What we learned
We learned new skills in data analytics, object recognition, audio models, and APIs. We also realized areas where we were skilled in, and areas where we could grow in, proving a valuable learning experience.
What's next for StormPuck
Better puck tracking with a custom trained model for more accurate commentary. Making a model to analyze how certain movements by a player are going to play out. A more responsive and cleaner frontend and UI. Server-grade computing power for real time commentary.
