Inspiration
Smart doorbells can generate numerous notifications, but users don't always know which events matter. We wanted to make home monitoring smarter by transforming ordinary doorbell events into clear, useful information. This inspired us to build RingCare AI, an AI-powered home awareness assistant.
What it does
RingCare AI converts simulated Ring doorbell events into contextual alerts and recommendations. It highlights delivery-related activity, records configured caregiver arrivals, flags prolonged presence using customizable rules, and generates AI-powered event summaries. Its interactive dashboard helps users understand events and decide whether they need attention.
How we built it
We built RingCare AI using Next.js, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. We integrated a language model API for AI-generated explanations and developed a modular event-processing system. A simulator generates sample doorbell events, a deterministic rule engine evaluates objective conditions, and AI transforms available information into understandable summaries. The application is designed for deployment on Vercel.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was ensuring AI-generated explanations remained grounded in available event data. We addressed this by combining deterministic rules with AI analysis, validating event information, handling uncertainty, and implementing fallback behavior when the AI service is unavailable. We also made simulated events clearly distinguishable from real camera activity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We brought event simulation, rule-based processing, AI-generated explanations, and an interactive dashboard together in one application. We're proud of creating a solution that aims to reduce notification overload and make home activity easier to understand without making unsupported assumptions about people's identities or intentions.
What we learned
We explored AI integration, API communication, frontend-backend architecture, data validation, environment-variable security, error handling, and deployment preparation. We also learned that reliable AI applications need deterministic safeguards, transparency, and graceful failure handling.
What's next for RingCare AI
We plan to explore integration with officially supported Ring services, subject to API availability and permissions. Future improvements include natural-language event search, smarter activity summaries, customizable notifications, and persistent event history. Our vision is to make home activity easier to understand through an intelligent, privacy-conscious assistant.
