While this is MLH's 8th Birthday, this is our 1st Birthday as a hackathon team. We started our journey together as a team last summer, and now that this summer is coming to a close, we were inspired to connect our journey in hackathons with MLH's Birthday. We wanted to create a fun tribute to MLH to show our creativity and appreciation for this community which has provided us with great opportunities to learn and improve our hacking skills while building memories that will last a lifetime.
We started our journey as a team last June. Almost none of us had any coding or hacking experience, so we had to work really hard to work our skills up. Lucky enough, we were able to find lots of success with our first project, and from there, we continued hacking every other weekend for the summer, making memories and being recognized for our work. Thus, just as MLH was born 8 years ago, "Haleakala Hacksquad" was born in 2020. Now, we have approached our first birthday, which almost coincides with MLH's birthday. Thus, we decided we combine the two events that are super important to us and create a fun and enjoyable project to show our appreciation for MLH and the great community members we have been surrounded by.
What it does
Ring to Sing is a web application that plays a Happy Birthday song for MLH. We have a bell button that users can "ring" to hear our song, hence the name "Ring to Sing." We also provided a stop button. Additionally, we have an about page where we have pictures of our team enjoying MLH hackathons throughout the last year to show our appreciation for MLH. Our team's personal journey is heavily tied to MLH. We used Google Cloud's Text-to-Speech API to interpret and play our song out loud.
How we built it
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we ran into while making this project was finding enough pictures of our team to add to the "about" page.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of making the entire project in such a short amount of time. We are very happy that we were able to reflect on our time in the MLH community and make a fun and heartfelt tribute to MLH's 8th Birthday. More holistically, we are proud of all the progress we have made as a team over the last year, and we are super proud of the great achievements we have been able to acquire as a team. We would like to thank MLH, the organizers, the mentors, and the great fellow hackers for helping us become so successful and comfortable in this community.
What we learned
From a software perspective, we learned how to use Google Cloud functions to create a fun and interactive website. From a personal standpoint, we learned a lot about MLH as a community and had lots of time to reflect on our time in the MLH community.
What's next for Ring to Sing
In the future, we want to use different voices for our application. We want to use our text-to-speech capabilities in different ways. We also want to incorporate new features that allow for more user interaction.
