Inspiration
Porch piracy costs US consumers an estimated $15 billion a year — over 104 million packages stolen, nearly 250,000 every day (SafeWise 2025 Package Theft Report) — yet most doorbell cameras just record. They don't understand. We wanted a doorbell that tells you 'your package arrived' instead of 'motion detected,' and warns you the moment that package disappears.
What it does
Ring Package Guardian turns any Ring doorbell into an intelligent package guard: (1) Package arrival alerts — the moment a courier drops a box, you get notified; (2) Package removal warnings — if the package vanishes and a person is in frame, instant alert; (3) Night activity detection — movement at your door between 11pm-6am gets flagged; (4) Realtime dashboard — every event with AI labels, confidence scores, and snapshots on a live timeline.
How we built it
Ring's Partner API is the core: (1) Webhooks — a Supabase Edge Function receives motion_detected/button_press events, verified with HMAC-SHA256; (2) Snapshot capture — on every event we fetch a frame via the media download endpoint into a private bucket; (3) Playground-verified — device discovery, capabilities, and status verified live against the Developers Playground sandbox. The AI layer classifies each snapshot with Gemini Vision (person/package/pet/vehicle/none) and evaluates alert rules. Dashboard on Cloudflare Pages subscribes via Supabase Realtime. Stack: Ring Partner API, Supabase (Edge Functions, Postgres, Storage, Realtime), Gemini Vision, Cloudflare Pages.
Challenges we ran into
The on-demand snapshot endpoint returned 500 in the Playground sandbox, so the E2E path fetches snapshots from webhook-triggered events (the production flow). Playground tokens expire in 30 minutes, so we built an HMAC-signed simulator for repeatable hardware-free testing.
What's next
Push notifications instead of dashboard-only alerts; 'lingering person' rule; multi-home support.
