Inspiration Smart security cameras and doorbells are meant to bring peace of mind, but notification fatigue is real. A single camera can trigger dozens of pings a day—cars driving past, tree branches swaying in the wind, neighborhood cats, and delivery drivers. Most homeowners end up muting notifications altogether, which defeats the purpose of having a security system. We wanted to solve this by creating Ring-Daily-Digest: an intelligent, quiet assistant that processes every event from your Ring devices behind the scenes and delivers a clean, high-signal executive summary once every 24 hours. What it does Ring-Daily-Digest aggregates and analyzes daily security camera activity, distilling raw events into an actionable recap:

  • Activity Timeline & Event Breakdown: Categorizes events by type (doorbell dings, detected motion, package drops) and highlights peak activity windows.
  • Noise Reduction & Cluster Detection: Bundles repeated trigger bursts (e.g., landscaping work or kids playing outside) into single summary events rather than flooding the log.
  • Device Health Monitoring: Tracks battery levels and Wi-Fi signal strength (RSSI), flagging devices that need charging or attention before they go offline.
  • Automated Daily Delivery: Compiles the recap into a clean, readable format and dispatches it every morning via email, Slack, Discord, or Telegram. How we built it
  • Integration Layer: Connected to Ring devices using Python and authentication token handling via the ring-doorbell library / Ring API endpoints.
  • Data Processing & Analytics: Built a parsing pipeline in Python (using Pandas) to clean raw timestamps, cluster temporally close events, and compute metric aggregates (busiest hours, false-alarm trends).
  • Delivery & Formatting: Generated responsive HTML email templates using Jinja2 and formatted payloads for Discord/Slack webhooks.
  • Automation & Orchestration: Packaged the workflow to run on a scheduled cron trigger using GitHub Actions / lightweight serverless functions (AWS Lambda). Challenges we ran into
  • Handling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Ring strictly requires 2FA or OAuth token refreshes. Handling persistent sessions without prompting the user for an SMS code every single night required setting up secure, automated token caching and refresh flows.
  • API Rate Limiting & Pagination: Pulling 24 hours of video event logs across multiple cameras without hitting Ring's undocumented API thresholds meant implementing exponential backoff and batch queries.
  • Differentiating Signal from Noise: Creating a heuristic to separate genuine events (like an actual visitor ringing the bell) from continuous minor motion triggers required tuning dynamic time-window clustering. Accomplishments that we're proud of
  • Zero Infrastructure Overhead: Designed the entire pipeline to run headlessly on a free-tier cron workflow, costing $0/month in hosting.
  • Battery & Connectivity Alerts: Built an early-warning alert system that successfully warns when battery levels dip below 20% or Wi-Fi connectivity drops to poor RSSI levels.
  • High-Readability Reports: Created a concise, scan-in-30-seconds layout that replaces hundreds of daily push alerts with a single morning update. What we learned
  • The Reality of Reverse-Engineered APIs: Working with unofficial APIs requires designing resilient fallback logic, robust error handling, and session state persistence.
  • Notification Ergonomics: We learned that more alerts do not equal more security. Summarizing and categorizing data often delivers higher real-world safety value than immediate raw notifications.
  • Secure Secret Management: Best practices for securely storing API tokens, session credentials, and webhook endpoints using environment variables and secret vaults.
