Inspiration
Legal systems can feel confusing and intimidating, especially for students and everyday people who aren’t familiar with laws or legal language. Situations like receiving a legal notice, dealing with a landlord, or studying in a different state can quickly become overwhelming. We wanted to create something that simplifies legal understanding not a replacement for a lawyer, but a tool that empowers people with basic knowledge of their rights.
What it does
RightSpeak is an AI-powered platform that helps users understand laws, rules, and legal situations in simple, easy to understand language. Instead of acting as a lawyer, it works as a guide that explains legal concepts clearly.
Users can:
Ask questions about legal situations Understand notices or documents Learn about their rights in everyday scenarios Get explanations in simple language (and potentially their own language)
It’s designed especially for students, renters, and individuals who may not have easy access to legal help.
How we built it
We built RightSpeak using AI-based language models combined with a structured approach to legal information. The system processes user queries and generates simplified explanations based on legal concepts.
The frontend was designed to be clean and user-friendly, while the backend connects to AI APIs to generate responses. Due to time constraints, we focused on building a functional MVP (version one) that demonstrates the core idea effectively.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring accuracy while dealing with legal information. Legal content requires precision, and training or tuning AI to provide reliable responses is complex.
Another major challenge was time we built the entire project in just 6 hours. Managing API rate limits and credits was also difficult, especially while testing and refining responses in real-time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully built a working prototype in a very short time Created a platform that makes legal knowledge more accessible Designed a system that simplifies complex legal language into something anyone can understand Tackled a real-world problem that impacts students and common people What we learned The importance of simplifying complex information for real users Challenges of working with AI in sensitive domains like law How to build and deploy a functional MVP under tight time constraints Managing APIs, rate limits, and rapid development workflows What's next for RightSpeak
This is just version one. Moving forward, we plan to:
Improve accuracy by training on better and more structured legal datasets Add multilingual support for regional languages Include region-specific legal information Add features like document upload and analysis Build safeguards and disclaimers for responsible usage
