Inspiration
This project draws inspiration from the most popular arcade street racing games and movies centered on racing from the 2000s to 2010s. Those iconic games and films defined the era with their high-speed thrills, engaging mechanics, and vibrant open worlds, serving as the perfect reference for our VR street racing experience.
What it does
Riders On The Night brings the best mechanics of arcade street racing into the VR realm. It combines high-octane racing with immersive features, offering players an open-world VR experience that captures the essence of arcade games while pushing the boundaries of realism and engagement.
Challenges we ran into
- Realistic Traffic System: Developing an AI traffic system that adheres to real-world rules, such as obeying traffic lights and managing dynamic interactions.
- Optimization for VR Open World: Creating a seamless, expansive open-world environment that maintains stable performance at 70–80 FPS, ensuring a smooth VR experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Open World:
We successfully built a large open world that runs smoothly in VR with stable 70–80 FPS performance, balancing detail and optimization.
Traffic System:
We implemented an intelligent traffic system where AI vehicles follow realistic traffic rules, such as stopping at lights, yielding, and responding dynamically to the player.
Vehicle Mechanics:
The player’s vehicle is of exceptionally high quality, featuring unique immersive mechanics. Players can seamlessly jump into and out of their cars, offering an unmatched VR experience.
What we learned
We gained deep insights into designing an immersive driving simulator. This includes understanding what sets VR racing games apart from both non-VR and other VR racing experiences, emphasizing realism and player engagement.
What's next for Riders On The Night
- Transforming the driving simulator into a multiplayer racing game, complete with competitive modes, cooperative activities, and diverse challenges.
- Expanding the selection of cars, adding customization options for vehicles, and enhancing the variety of gameplay experiences.
