Inspiration
Both my teammate and I participate in activities requiring constantly commuting to and from places, and sometimes it can be difficult working out a ride there. Also, the pollution from all those cars driving on the road adds up, and so we thought this would a great way of solving both a social and environmental problem.
What it does
This program allows drivers and students to sign themselves up to either give rides, or request a ride. From there, students will be matched with drivers, who'll appear on their dashboard. Crowdsourced event management means anything important will be accounted for, and it gives communities a centralized and autonomous way of managing events.
How we built it
Making use of AI programming tools, we built a simple website that has a home page with event information, and a few subpages along with user account management that allows each user to individually manage their situations.
Challenges we ran into
There was a bit of a challenge trying to come up with an original and innovative idea, but with some research we were able to find something we both felt would be helpful. We also ran into problems trying to integrate the website with a backend database manager, considering we were now working with two pieces of software.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to build this program given the time constraints, especially working through all the critical problems that the website was having.
What we learned
This project really taught us the importance of careful planning, and the importance of good communication and working well with your team. I think without the thought that we put into dividing up tasks and setting up timelines, we wouldn't have gotten to where we are.
What's next for RideMatch
I want to propose this idea to my community and see what the consensus is. If things go well, I might work on implementing a wider scale version that'll be publicly available for use.
