Inspiration

The spark for RicoAI came from a frustration with the repetitive, time-consuming rituals of software project kickoffs—translating vague ideas into structured plans, setting up repositories, and manually crafting milestones and issues. Unlike traditional tools that merely enhance routine tasks, RicoAI leverages generative AI to create a novel development workflow—one that starts with a developer’s vision and ends with a fully structured GitHub repository, ready for action.

What it does

How we built it

We built API calls to GitHub REST API using Python and FastAPI. We built a frontend using React that makes use of these API calls to create the repository, create the milestones and create the issues. We made use of OpenAI API to generate the milestones and issues based on the user's needs (Project Description, Features, Duration for Project, Number of Hours spent on project per day, Tech Stack) to generate the curated milestones and issues.

Challenges we ran into

Frontend: Learning new concepts in React as beginner React devs

Backend:

  1. Handling different types of errors when using GitHub's REST API
  2. Setting up API endpoints so that the frontend can use them easily
  3. Learning deployment configurations

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. We managed to deploy a full stack web app despite most of us being first time hackathon participants
  2. Our UI looks very clean and minimalistic
  3. All APIs work at a magnificent speed

What we learned

Apart from the concepts and better utilization of the tech stacks, we learned that integration between frontend and backend can be rather tough! So it is always good to be thorough with discussing what APIs the frontend needs.

What's next for RicoAI

  • While our MVP is only capable of creating issues for the user's own github account, this project can extend work for a team of developers. It can also be used to onboard a new employee to an existing project.
  • We would like to give a bird's eye view of all of our projects. We plan to add a in-built page to view all of the milestones and issues. We also wanted to give users the flexibility to check off the issues.
