Inspiration

We were inspired by the Google Doodle Champion Island game, as it was an enjoyable experience for us when we were younger. We saw a way to link something we had an appreciation for with the education of the next generation.

What it does

STEAM Island is a series of mini-games designed to introduce and attract kids to the world of STEAM. There is a mini-game for each of the STEAM subjects: science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

How we built it

We built in the Unity game engine and made use of parallel programming to develop multiple mini-games relating to STEAM that we combined into one experience.

Challenges we ran into

Most of us were a bit rusty with Unity, but we were able to make use of online documentation and share resources to get our bearings. We also lost our progress on the open hub world a few hours before submission and had to put together a quick Main Menu to connect our games.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

3 of our members were able to accomplish the goals of creating their mini-games that relate to different STEAM fields. Each member of our team was able to contribute to the project in a meaningful way. We are also proud of the concept of taking a popular formula for a game and turning it into a way for kids to develop an interest in STEAM.

What we learned

We learned that establishing interest in young children is just as important as educating them. Childhood experiences are very influential on future passions and career choices. Our game is intended to intrigue young minds and attract them to the world of STEAM.

What's next for STEAM Island

We hope to bring a fresh hub world to better connect the mini-games and allow a bit of exploration and progression.
