Inspiration

We wanted to make exploring a college campus a more interactive, enjoyable, and enticing experience.

What it does

It provides a gamified tour app for the Rice campus. Certain landmarks pop up interactive games when "discovered." A special sequence plays when all landmarks have been found.

How we built it

It was mainly built with React, TypeScript, and Vite. It uses MapLibre and checks browser geolocation every three seconds. Progress is stored in cookies using stable location IDs. Each location supports media, rich React content, narration through ElevenLabs, and custom interactive games. The entire client deploys as a static GitHub Pages site with Vite-managed assets.

Challenges we ran into

Struggled to figure out how to store user data like how many locations have been discovered. Found that cookies were perfect to store this data. Initially used a image of the Rice Campus as the map but could not properly scale it to accurately reflect the users location. Switching to MapLibre helped by integrating a live updated map.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Created many interactive games for different locations. Also created a very modular system that allows more locations, experiences, and games to be added easily. WE MADE EXPLORING CAMPUS ADDICTING!!!!

What we learned

Learned how to make a functioning webapp that relies on location services, AI powered voice narration, and interactive games.

What's next for RiceHunt

RiceHunt will become a more modular platform for many universities to easily create interactable campus tours.
