Inspiration
We wanted to create a fun and engaging 2D platformer inspired by classic arcade games. The idea was to build a game where players control a brave frog, overcome obstacles, collect rewards, and enjoy a simple yet challenging adventure. Our goal was to improve our game development skills while creating an enjoyable experience for players.
What it does
Ribbit Runner is a 2D platformer where players guide a frog through platforms filled with obstacles and collectibles. Players must jump over traps, collect items, and reach the finish line to complete the level. The game also features a victory popup, smooth controls, and interactive gameplay.
How we built it
We built Ribbit Runner using Unity and C#. Unity's 2D tools were used to design the levels, while C# scripts handled player movement, jumping, collision detection, collectibles, UI interactions, and the finish line mechanics. We also added animations, sound effects, and game menus to create a polished experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was making the player's movement feel smooth and responsive. We also spent time debugging collision detection for obstacles, collectibles, and the finish line. Designing balanced platform layouts and integrating UI elements such as the victory popup and game over screen required several rounds of testing and refinement.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully developed a complete and playable 2D platformer.
- Implemented smooth movement and jumping mechanics.
- Created engaging levels with obstacles and collectibles.
- Added a finish line with a victory popup for level completion.
- Designed an intuitive user interface with menus and game states.
- Delivered a polished game with animations and sound effects.
What we learned
This project helped us gain hands-on experience with Unity, C# scripting, 2D physics, collision detection, UI design, animations, and game testing. We also improved our teamwork, debugging, and problem-solving skills throughout the development process.
What's next for Ribbit Runner
We plan to expand Ribbit Runner by adding multiple levels, enemy AI, boss fights, power-ups, new environments, improved animations, background music, a scoring and leaderboard system, and mobile support with touch controls. These enhancements will make the game more challenging, immersive, and enjoyable for players.
