Inspiration
Have you ever watched a movie and wished you could pause the story itself—not just the screen—to ask a question? Maybe you forgot why a character did something, wanted to know what happens next, or wanted to watch a Japanese film but couldn't understand the language.
We imagined a TV experience where curiosity never interrupts entertainment.
What it does
Rewind AI is an AI-powered story companion designed for Fire TV. It helps viewers catch up on plots, understand character relationships, ask questions about story events, and explore explanations with user-controlled spoilers. It also aims to make international entertainment more accessible through dialogue translation and contextual language assistance.
Unlike a generic chatbot, Rewind is designed around the viewing experience: select a story, ask a question, and get an explanation grounded in the available story context.
How we built it
We designed Rewind around a TV-friendly interface with remote-based navigation, a structured story knowledge base, and an AI backend for contextual question answering. Our planned stack includes React/React Native, the xAI Grok API, Supabase, Vercel, and a translation service, with GitHub for collaboration and version control.
Challenges we faced
The biggest challenge is balancing rich AI assistance with the limitations of television hardware, response latency, spoiler protection, and access to media content. We narrowed the MVP to story-grounded explanations and translation of supplied text rather than assuming access to audio from third-party streaming apps.
What makes Rewind different
Rewind brings story understanding and language assistance together in one TV-first experience. Viewers can choose how much they want to know—from a spoiler-safe explanation to a full-story answer—while exploring entertainment across languages.
Our vision is simple: understand every story, in your own way.
