Inspiration

The fashion industry generates millions of tons of textile waste every year, while many perfectly usable clothes remain unused because they are outdated, damaged, or no longer match personal style. Custom tailoring and sustainable fashion are often expensive and inaccessible. We wanted to bridge this gap by using AI to help people reimagine existing garments instead of discarding them, making sustainable fashion simple, creative, and personalized.

What it does

ReWear AI is an AI-powered circular fashion platform that transforms old clothing into personalized designs.

Users upload a photo of a garment and either:

choose from AI-generated redesign inspirations, or sketch or describe their own design.

The AI analyzes whether the transformation is technically feasible based on the garment's structure, fabric, and construction. Once validated, users receive a visualization of the redesigned garment and can connect with local tailors or upcycling partners to bring the design to life.

The platform extends garment life, reduces textile waste, and makes personalized fashion more accessible.

How we built it

We developed a prototype consisting of:

An image upload interface for existing garments. AI image generation to visualize redesigned clothing. A garment analysis pipeline that evaluates whether a proposed redesign can realistically be created. A recommendation engine that suggests suitable redesigns based on garment type. A workflow connecting users with alteration or upcycling services for execution.

The prototype combines computer vision, generative AI, and rule-based feasibility checks to support practical clothing transformations.

Challenges we ran into Determining whether AI-generated designs can actually be stitched from an existing garment. Limited availability of labeled datasets for clothing alterations and garment construction. Balancing creative redesign suggestions with practical manufacturing constraints. Designing a user experience that is intuitive for people without fashion design experience. Accomplishments that we're proud of Created an AI workflow focused on extending garment life rather than encouraging new purchases. Combined sustainability, personalization, and AI into a single platform. Developed a feasibility-checking concept that helps prevent unrealistic redesign suggestions. Promoted circular fashion by encouraging reuse instead of disposal. What we learned

Through building ReWear AI, we learned that sustainability challenges require solutions beyond image generation. Real-world impact depends on integrating AI with practical manufacturing workflows, understanding garment construction, and designing around user needs. We also gained experience applying computer vision and generative AI to a tangible environmental problem.

What's next for ReWear AI

Our next goals are to:

Improve garment feasibility prediction using larger fashion datasets. Build AI models that recognize fabrics, seams, and construction details. Partner with local tailors, alteration shops, and textile upcycling businesses. Add cost and material estimates before users place orders. Develop an AI assistant that suggests the most sustainable redesign based on available fabric. Expand into a marketplace connecting consumers, designers, and textile waste collectors to create a complete circular fashion ecosystem.
