Inspiration

Every year, millions of wearable clothes end up in landfills because people assume they are beyond repair or don't know how to redesign them. At the same time, skilled tailors and fashion designers struggle to reach customers online. We wanted to bridge this gap by using AI to help people extend the life of their clothes while promoting sustainable fashion and supporting local businesses.

What it does

ReWear AI is an AI-powered platform that helps users repair, redesign, and upcycle clothing.

Users can:

  • Upload a photo of a garment.
  • Detect the clothing type and damage using AI.
  • Receive repair suggestions with estimated cost, difficulty, and repair time.
  • Generate creative upcycling ideas.
  • Visualize how the repaired or redesigned clothing could look.
  • Find nearby tailors for repairs.
  • Connect with fashion designers for custom redesigns.
  • Track the environmental impact, including CO₂ emissions, water, and textile waste saved.

How we built it

We built ReWear AI as a modern web application using React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and Vite.

The frontend provides an intuitive interface for uploading clothing images, browsing AI-generated recommendations, and exploring redesign options. Framer Motion was used for animations, while mock AI responses simulate garment analysis, repair recommendations, sustainability calculations, and designer matching. The current prototype demonstrates the complete user experience without requiring backend integration.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a workflow that remains simple while offering multiple AI-powered features.
  • Creating realistic repair recommendations and sustainability estimates for different clothing conditions.
  • Simulating AI-generated redesigns without integrating large vision models during the hackathon.
  • Building a polished and responsive user interface within a limited timeframe.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built an end-to-end prototype covering repair, redesign, and upcycling.
  • Combined AI recommendations with practical services such as tailor and designer discovery.
  • Created an engaging user experience with sustainability metrics that clearly demonstrate environmental impact.
  • Designed a solution that addresses both consumer convenience and textile waste reduction.

What we learned

This project showed us that sustainability challenges can often be addressed by improving access to information rather than creating entirely new products. We also gained experience in designing AI-assisted user experiences, structuring recommendation systems, and building polished frontend prototypes suitable for rapid product validation.

What's next for ReWear AI

Our next goal is to transform the prototype into a production-ready platform by integrating real AI vision models for garment and damage detection, generative AI for realistic redesign visualizations, and live maps for nearby tailors and designers. We also plan to introduce repair bookings, in-app messaging, online payments, and a marketplace where designers can showcase sustainable fashion transformations. In the future, ReWear AI could partner with fashion brands, thrift stores, and NGOs to promote circular fashion and significantly reduce textile waste.
