Inspiration
We took inspiration from our favorite game UNDERTALE and other games of the same fighting genre, as well as rhythm games. We decided to similarly merge narrative Visual Novel style elements with intense rhythm gameplay.
What it does
REVOLUTION SUMMER is a unique visual novel game about Joan, frontwoman of the band Sonatine, who reencounters her ex-bandmate, Serena, at a Battle of the Bands competition. The two must express and sort through their complicated feelings in a series of short visual novel sections and three rhythm minigames where the player faces their opponent in several intense concert battles to determine the superior band. Themes of creative expression, vulnerability, and authenticity are explored in this game, as expressed by the original art and soundtrack created.
How we built it
Game Engine: Unity Programming Language: C# Music DAWs: Garageband, Logic Pro Art and Visuals: Photoshop
Challenges we ran into
Our main challenge was collaboration across different areas of music, art, code, and story.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Fully DIY self-recorded and self-produced original soundtrack with over four songs
- Original character designs, backgrounds, and artwork
- Fun and unique game mechanic explored in three rounds of song battles and beatmaps
What we learned
The importance of communication as it greatly helped us work on our project. We had to align our creative visions with our respective roles and gained experience in making those ideas into something cohesive.
What's next for Revolution Summer
We would like to develop a "Freestyle" mode where users can upload a .midi file, and the game will assign a beatmap so the user can play to it.
