Inspiration

The inspiration for this app derived from the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of youth across our communities. Through the lack of social interactions with friends, classmates, and teachers, youth have experienced significant stress, anxiety, depression, and other detrimental mental issues. While, the government has funded millions of dollars into mental health resources, these community social workers lack an effective means to comfortably communicate with youth. Likewise, the average youth would prefer browsing through traditional social media sites rather than formally contacting a community resource.

What it does

Revitalize bridges the gap between youth and community resources funded by school boards through an open, comfortable platform where youth feel supported, loved, and valued while easily communicating with mental health professionals. We provide access to a plethora of community resources directly funded by schools to students that would otherwise struggle in attaining these resources. Through this program, youth are introduced to a comfortable user friendly interface completed with rapport and a sense of belonging through the "Our Stories" page. In this section, youth can openly express their mental health highlights and lowlights to a loving and accepting community. Furthermore, the community resources option allows for youth to easily and readily access to mental health professionals. The weekly survey statistics option allows participants to view their weekly progress on mental health, with daily notifications to complete the survey. Other notifications such as "Share your story" & "Want to chat" actively encourages user participation.

How we built it

We investigated a variety of design prototypes before deciding on Marvel Design Prototypes to share our idea. Through Marvel we created a prototype app to demonstrate some of the features our Revitalize app would feature. Using a combination of hot spot design techniques as well as mobile development we offer insight into what Revitalize would look like in an iPhone setting.

Challenges we ran into

Entering this hackathon, all of the members of our group had no coding experience and extremely minimal experience with design or prototype applications. As a result, although we were able to envision the goal and outcome for Revitalize, we struggled to actually make the app a reality. Through contacting mentors and attending the workshops at Hackathon, we were able to develop a greater understanding and improve our skills of these technological aspects.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of our versatility and persistence in learning and adapting to a field of technology that we were not very well-versed in. Through our collective efforts and teamwork, we were able to overcome these difficulties and produce a complete final prototype.

What we learned

In this experience, we have been able to learn the interdisciplinary aspect of technology in all walks of life. Design and coding are not only isolated to fields such as computer science, however they can also be applied to different themes such as mental health. Through understanding these applications, design and coding become a catalyst to future innovation and exciting developments in the field of mental health.

What's next for Revitalize

We are looking for investors and assistance in placing this prototype into action through a functioning app. Furthermore, as outlined in the next steps of our presentation, we would be looking for strategic partnerships with local school district boards to implement this app with youth in order to make a lasting positive impact on their lives.
