Inspiration
We built ReverseCAD to help people replace broken parts instead of throwing away entire objects.
How we built it
Our SwiftUI iPhone app captures photos and depth data. TypeSafe Jev identifies the object and proposes its bounding box, while our geometry pipeline analyzes surviving outlines, repeated features, and intact reference pieces. A Python backend uses CadQuery to generate replacement models, with ghost overlays for visual comparison.
Challenges and lessons
We repeatedly tested saved scans and refined the capture, reconstruction, and preview workflows. Noisy depth, hidden connectors, and tiny ridges proved much harder than overall shape. Torn-paper repairs worked well; detailed mechanical replacements remain experimental. Our biggest lesson: a printable model isn’t necessarily a part that fits.
