Users are shown teasers of content from users outside their network (eg. books they’ve liked, places they’ve checked in, etc.) Drip feed non-threatening personal facts so that it feels fun and enticing to incrementally discover more about someone you may or may not know At the end, you have a whole picture of a user who is dissimilar to you (but perhaps similar in ways you never expected)
