BizExpense - Smart Expense Manager

Inspiration

Small businesses often spend too much time manually entering receipts, organizing expenses, and tracking business spending. We wanted to make this process faster and easier on mobile.

What it does

BizExpense Mobile allows users to upload or capture receipts, extract expense information using OCR, review and confirm the detected data, categorize expenses, and view expense summaries from a mobile dashboard.

The app also includes premium functionality using RevenueCat, allowing us to manage Pro access, paywalls, subscriptions, and purchase restoration.

How we built it

We extended our existing BizExpense platform instead of rebuilding everything from scratch.

The project uses:

React Native and Expo for the mobile application
TypeScript for the frontend
FastAPI for the backend API
PostgreSQL for expense and document data
OCR for receipt data extraction
RevenueCat for subscription management, Pro entitlement, paywalls, and purchase restoration

The mobile app communicates with the existing BizExpense backend and reuses the existing expense, OCR, category, and dashboard logic.

Challenges we faced

One of the main challenges was integrating a mobile subscription flow into an existing web-based expense management system while keeping the backend architecture reusable.

We also had to make sure the OCR workflow was simple enough for mobile users: upload a receipt, review the extracted information, correct it if necessary, and confirm the expense.

Another challenge was handling RevenueCat entitlements and ensuring that premium features behave correctly even when the subscription state changes.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate RevenueCat into a React Native application, manage premium entitlements, build a mobile client on top of an existing API, and design a practical OCR-based expense workflow.

What's next

Next, we plan to improve receipt recognition accuracy, add more analytics and reporting features, expand premium functionality, and further improve the mobile user experience.
