Inspiration
I have been dealing with unidentifiable medical issues for several years now; after almost 10 various appointments, I found that I was having trouble sufficiently communicating all the jumbled information & test results I had. And especially with age, it has become more of my responsibility to handle my medical processes. So, we built this tool for everyone who faces difficulty tracking their medical history. Especially those with chronic issues.
What it does
Reva securely stores encrypted medical records, using AI to generate a medical profile for the user. All insights generated by AI directly link to the source records to ensure data is accurate. Before appointments, user can do a pre-appointment screen which takes in appointment type & reason, and then generates a pdf with appointment purpose, all relevant medical context/history, and questions to ask in order to ensure the appointment time is well used. We also built a recording & note-taking system that transcribes your appointment and adds it to records, ensuring no information is lost in speech.
How we built it
We mapped out our data structures & tool stacks for each individual function, and then AI-engineered the project using a detailed spec & nasa-style code breaks with comments to ensure code is cleanly structured. Then, we set up Vercel with necessary environment variables to prevent exposing them through github. After several rounds of feature & design revision, we shifted our focus to cleaning the codebase for conciseness, and then did final touch ups on styling & built out a pre-populated demo page for users to test out the functionality of the tool.
Challenges we ran into
We had difficulty with some of the styling, server-side setup with managing/organizing the different API keys, connectors, urls, DNS setup, etc. We also had issues with merge conflicts while we all were working simultaneously on the same code. We also had some issues with data not syncing to the server, so different instances of the same account were not consistent.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was all of our first hackathon. We met at check-in, had an amazing time building together, worked very cohesively, and put out a product we are all genuinely proud of and believe can make an impact in the world.
What we learned
The greatest strength was not having multiple hands and devices for more output. It was the collaboration; building on each others' ideas, picking each others' brains, being each others' 'rubber ducks'. And also that while the hackathon is centered around the project, our greatest productivity is when we stepped our focus away from perfection and more towards truly enjoying the process and the learning. Talking to each other, sharing our skill sets, testing other teams' projects, laughing with peers. 36 hours of nonstop coding is grueling, and makes burnout easy. 36 hours of joy, laughter, and learning is far more bearable, and retains excitement for the product and the building process.
What's next for reva
As a team, we hope to continue to work together to revise this product & ship it. In terms of the product itself, we would like to build in a calendar, expand functionality with potential hardware integration (get data from fitbit, whoop, oura, etc.), medicine reminders & trackers, and automatic calling for appointment booking, record-pulling, and even getting quotes or figuring out logistics such as referrals.
