Inspiration
Inspiration When we all gathered together we learned through our shared experiences that COV-ID has caused most of our youth to lose their touch when it came to communicating with their peers. It was a problem we couldn’t turn a blind eye to and let our society suffer from social anxiety. We knew our only choice was to gently force people out of their shells and be the best versions of themselves. We strive to follow a quote said by Alan Watts “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance”.
What it does
A meeting application design for students. This is a react based application designed for university students that want to create and attend in person events depending on their interest
How we built it
How we built it? To build this project we used Nodejs for the backend and Expo for the frontend. Expo is a framework that wraps React-Native to assist in building, deploying, and debugging iOS and Android applications. We used Express as our server framework to create JSON RESTful APIs for communicating between our mobile app and server/database. We used google cloud to host both our server code and our database with Firestore. When developing our mobile app, we used a multitude of npm packages to reach our desired goal. We had used react-navigation to create a tab navigator and a stack navigator. We also used plenty of Expo packages like expo-secure-store to store user authentication tokens and expo-location to get the users precise location.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge for this project was probably getting familiar with the react technology and using it to program the front end and back end as well. Some of us were not familiar with coding in javascript and testing code for some of us was challenging because of all the extensions and libraries that were used. Time was also a big part because it seems like time flew and especially since some of us were interested in the info sessions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
How we were treated in this community. Everyone seemed very helpful and excited to work on this so it was very inspiring. All the work all the team put in and how far we got to finalizing. Two of our teammates were beginners in mobile programming and new to coding in a team so definitely worth the effort. Networking is definitely also a plus. We met great people through this hackathon and most of us plan to come back. I was able to feel like I’ve left this hackathon with new skills that I can apply to the real world.
What we learned
What I learned? We as a team learned how to develop with a group of individuals. Through school, we don’t really experience working in git to collaborate with other programmers. All of us were beginners and experiencing our first hackathon so this was all a brand new experience for us. We used nodejs to code server RESTful APIs and react-native to code our desired mobile app. Some of us have had no experience in using javascript so for us it was a ton of information to take in to contribute to our project.
What's next for ReunitE
Expanding to different university's, because we know that we aren't the only ones affected.
