ReturnJoy
Make every resolution a reason to return.
Turn a customer's own words into thoughtful care: a choice they understand, an action the merchant approves, and a result everyone can see.
Our demonstrated PayPal Sandbox journey connects a captured $80 purchase, an AI-guided care decision, and a completed $12 refund with a verified receipt.
Inspiration
Great independent shops put care into every product. ReturnJoy carries that care into the moment after a purchase, bringing customer intent, shop policy, and the next action into one welcoming workspace.
Meet Morrow Studio, our sample independent shop, and Alex, a sample customer who loves an $80 backpack and wants to keep it after noticing a small scuff. Their journey captures the heart of ReturnJoy: understand what matters, offer a thoughtful choice, and make the resolution visible.
What it does
One request. A thoughtful choice. A clear resolution.
Alex describes the experience in their own words. Qwen, running locally through Ollama, identifies the cosmetic concern and the wish to keep the backpack. ReturnJoy applies the configured 15% care policy and presents a precise option: keep the backpack, with a $12 care refund for the merchant to approve.
Alex chooses the option. The merchant reviews the chosen resolution, the policy, and the $12 amount, then confirms the action. The ReturnJoy receipt brings the PayPal Sandbox outcome into focus: a completed $12 care refund and $68 in purchase value retained in this sample journey. ReturnJoy reads the refund status back from PayPal and matches the amount before presenting the completed result.
Customer choice, merchant action, and the resulting receipt tell one connected story. Thoughtful care becomes a concrete outcome.
How we built it
ReturnJoy pairs natural-language understanding with precise policy calculations. Ollama runs Qwen to turn the customer's message into structured intent. Application logic matches that intent to the configured care policy and calculates the amount in cents. AI helps understand the person; the application prepares the exact action; the merchant makes the decision.
The payment layer connects the care journey to PayPal from the original purchase through the resolution. In our demonstrated PayPal Sandbox journey, the buyer approves an $80 USD purchase, ReturnJoy captures the payment, and the merchant approves a $12 partial refund. ReturnJoy reads back the completed refund and matches it to the receipt. The original capture records the partial refund, and the receipt remains available after an application restart.
The receipt brings the original amount, care amount, remaining purchase value, and recorded status together in one view.
Challenges we solved
Connecting flexible customer language to a precise payment action was our core engineering challenge. We solved it by pairing structured AI intent with deterministic policy and amount calculations, then placing the exact action behind merchant confirmation. Persisted operation identities keep retries tied to the same action. PayPal status and amount readback produce a matched receipt that remains available after an application restart.
What we learned
We learned to give AI a focused role: understand what matters to the customer and help shape a clear choice. Explicit merchant approval makes the decision visible, while provider readback and a persistent receipt carry that clarity through completion. These lessons shaped ReturnJoy's four-step journey: understand, choose, confirm, and celebrate.
What makes ReturnJoy special
Care starts with what the customer wants. Alex's wish to keep the backpack shapes the proposed resolution.
Policy becomes a clear action. The configured 15% care option turns an $80 sample purchase into a precise $12 proposal.
The merchant leads the decision. The chosen resolution, policy, and amount come together for one focused review.
The outcome is easy to follow. Customer choice, merchant confirmation, and the receipt form one visible path from request to resolution.
The payment result is verified. The PayPal Sandbox journey completes the $80 purchase and $12 partial refund, with matching provider readback and a persistent receipt.
Our vision
We're building toward a future where every independent shop can make customer care feel as personal as the products it creates. ReturnJoy brings that vision to life through a focused journey: understand, choose, confirm, and celebrate the resolution.
Make every resolution a reason to return.
