Inspiration
In an era of rapid technological progress, I observed that while we gain convenience, we also foster mindsets of comparison, lethargy, and fierce competition. I wanted to explore whether we can reclaim the core simplicity we've lost. My theme is: the more advanced our technology becomes, the simpler our mindset must return. We are not separate colors, but a unified palette; we are one family on Earth.
What it does
"Return" is an AI-generated film that follows this philosophical journey. It begins by showing a pristine world (simplicity) that is then invaded by artificial competition (the "price of convenience"). The narrative follows a character who, after failing in this new competitive world, chooses an "inner return." He reverts to simple, essential actions—cultivating and sharing—which ultimately brings the fragmented community together, realizing the ideal of "mutual benefit."
How we built it
I used a complete generative workflow to ensure high controllability and a consistent artistic vision:
- Shot Conception (with Gemini): I first conceptualized the narrative and described my key scenes to Gemini to generate the primary assets: the first frame (start image), the last frame (end image), and the descriptive motion prompts.
- Keyframe Generation (with Google Imagen / "NanoBanana"): I used Google's Imagen model to generate the high-quality static start and end frames.
- Video Generation (with Google Veo 3.1): I then used VEO to process these keyframes, generating the video motion between them.
- Music Generation (with ElevenLabs): I used ElevenLabs to create a custom, copyright-compliant music score that matched the film's emotional shifts.
- Final Assembly (with CapCut): Finally, I used CapCut (剪映) to splice all generated clips and the music track together, performing the final edits.
Challenges we ran into
AI generation still has limitations. The biggest challenge was when the tool couldn't perfectly match the image in my brain. To overcome this, I had to adopt a flexible directorial approach, often choosing different camera angles or motion prompts to ensure the overall flow remained as close as possible to my original vision.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
I am proud that this film feels like a true "declaration to the world." Even if only one person sees it, I feel a deep sense of accomplishment that the abstract, philosophical feeling in my heart—of returning to simplicity—has finally been presented visually.
What we learned
We learned that AI does not replace human thought; rather, it inspires more thinking. We must use our own vision to drive the AI to present what we want. This process makes thinking itself more exciting, because what you can imagine is now on the path to becoming possible.
What's next for "Return"
While my future work will remain grounded in the current state of the world, I plan to inject more positive themes. I want to create more films that help eliminate anxiety, spread happiness, and convey the importance of a thoughtful, positive mindset.
