Inspiration
I couldn't find a polished, visually appealing Minesweeper game for mobile that felt great to play—especially one supporting classic virtual D-pad controls. Most mobile versions lack design polish and retro charm. I set out to create a mobile Minesweeper that pairs multiple retro visual themes with a virtual gamepad for an authentic handheld gaming experience.
What it does
- Retro Themes: Offers customizable retro themes, including Game Boy pixel art, classic desktop Windows, and arcade styles.
- Handheld & Virtual Controls: Features a dedicated handheld mode with a virtual D-pad and buttons to prevent fingers from blocking the board.
- Mobile-First Design: Built specifically for smartphones with responsive layouts and tactile haptic feedback.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing virtual D-pad ergonomics on compact mobile screens without compromising board visibility.
- Maintaining crisp pixel-art scaling across diverse screen ratios and high-refresh-rate displays.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Recreating the nostalgic feel of classic handheld consoles on modern smartphones.
- Delivering responsive, precision virtual controller navigation.
What we learned
- Optimizing virtual D-pad input latency and touch ergonomics on mobile devices.
- Blending retro aesthetics with modern UI responsive design.
What's next
- Adding additional retro skins and audio packs.
- Implementing global leaderboards and a daily challenge mode.
