Inspiration
RetroOS is inspired by the nostalgia of Windows XP, bringing back its classic aesthetics and functionality while running on modern hardware. We aimed to recreate the charm of early 2000s computing, from the signature blue taskbar to the familiar interface that many grew up using.
What it does
RetroOS provides a lightweight, retro-style operating environment designed to mimic the look and feel of Windows XP while being open-source and customizable. It includes a functional desktop, start menu, taskbar, and basic applications that replicate the classic experience.
How we built it
Godot (engine) Stable Diffusion, Sora (images and animations) Gemini (API chat bot)
Challenges we ran into
Capturing the essence of Windows XP’s design while making it scalable and functional with modern tools was a challenge. Ensuring a smooth experience with animations and window management required careful consideration of rendering techniques. Deciding which features to include while keeping the project manageable and maintainable was a balancing act.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully recreating a nostalgic Windows XP-like environment with modern web technologies. Implementing an interactive desktop, start menu, and taskbar with fluid functionality. Providing an open-source platform for users to explore and contribute to.
What we learned
Gained experience in optimizing Godot for better performance in complex applications. Deepened our understanding of UI/UX design principles from legacy operating systems.
What's next for RetroOS
Adding more built-in applications, such as a file explorer and settings panel. Enhancing theming support to allow users to switch between different classic Windows styles. Implementing a virtual file system for better interactivity.
