Our Idea
We were motivated by Swamphack's retro and finance themed challenges. However, we realized our collective education experiences taught us little in the necessary skills we needed like budgeting, paying taxes and investing. With themes in mind, coupled with being broke college kids who lack much financial literacy, we felt inspired to combine these various aspects and sought to make a web application that would provide tools for students to be financially responsible. This is how RetroFi came to be.
What it does
Our project has different aspects
- A budgeting tool that helps students visualise and break down their monthly finances into different categories.
- An investment tool that helps students calculate interest rates for investments but also doubles as a student loan interest calculator.
- Tutorials and different modules that walks through the necessities of how to open bank accounts, pay credit and debit cards, do taxes and more.
- An engaging, educational text-based game (gotta love the retro theme) that teaches how to spend wisely.
How we built it
Our web application is built with Javascript using the React framework to implement the frontend. In addition, we utilised other resources like Materials-UI, graph API, routers and more to develop the visuals on the site. To compliment the features and tools of our application, we created retro-themed graphics and backgrounds on Photoshop.
How to run it
git clone cd ufswamphacks2021 cd ufswamphacks2021
(we messed up a bit on the directories so there is a nested directory and you will have to cd twice)
then: npm install npm start
Challenges we ran into
Half of our team was not experienced with Javascript or React; however, we resolved this by pair programming when necessary. Furthermore, we were not used to GitHub on a regular basis, so we had to learn quickly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
Anna: How it turned out design wise. Matina: Became more confident at JS and GitHub. Phillip: Learned more about JavaScript with no prior experience to this. Tan: Working with HTML/CSS, as it was my first time.
What we learned
Javascript, React, and GitHub. How to use APIs, routers, hooks, and links.
