Inspiration

This project was inspired by one of our teammates, a photographer who frequently relies on image conversion tools. Many of the existing platforms are cluttered with intrusive ads, spam, and unnecessary redirects, making the user experience frustrating and inefficient. We set out to build a solution that is clean, fast, and entirely focused on serving the user—without distractions.

What It Does

Retro Image Converter is a streamlined web application that enables users to easily upload images and convert them between major file formats. It provides a simple, intuitive interface with no ads, no clickbait, and no technical barriers—just quick, reliable image conversions.

How We Built It

We built Retro Image Converter using AI-assisted development. The core of the project was developed through Bolt.new and ChatGPT Codex, which allowed us to bring our idea to life without a traditional development background. By leveraging these powerful tools, we were able to design, code, and deploy the app ourselves.

Challenges We Faced

Our biggest challenge was that none of our team members had a development background. The one developer we initially collaborated with abandoned the project early on, which forced us to start from scratch. Learning to code while simultaneously building the product tested our patience and perseverance.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

We are proud to have created a fully functional web application that we genuinely find useful in our daily lives. Eliminating ads, clickbait, and spam has made the experience refreshing and accessible, and we are proud to offer a clean alternative to the cluttered tools we previously relied on.

What We Learned

Through this project, we learned how to code using AI-assisted tools, how to navigate and operate within terminal environments, and how to push through challenges despite numerous setbacks. We also gained exposure to various online resources and platforms that we were previously unaware of.

What’s Next for Retro Image Converter

Our next goal is to develop a mobile version of the app and launch it on the App Store and Google Play. We plan to introduce a subscription model that will support continued development while keeping the platform ad-free and user-focused.
