Inspiration
We were inspired by the unethical practices of fast fashion companies and how they promote the unsustainable distribution of clothing. People then buy these clothes in bulk and eventually, leave them in their closets, rarely to ever use again. So that is what inspired the question - "How can we encourage people to use more sustainable clothing brands?"
What it does
So our product starts out as a browser extension. While shopping online, users can activate this extension and our program will search our database of sustainable clothing alternatives and present you with the respective websites to these alternatives along with the sustainability score of the current site/company website you are on. This addresses two things - awareness and accessibility. This feature goes further where the extension also links the user to our website and presents them with a moodboard of different outfits and clothing combinations they can try all sourced from sustainable companies. We also realised the importance of community building and how this can impact individual behaviours. As such, we constructed a community tab where users can take a look at the moodboards people in the community are willing to share.
How we built it
We built our app through extensive and vigorous determination and hard work. Also - in depth discussion, multiple iterations, on Figma and in one long night.
Challenges we ran into
At times, conflicting interests but we good now.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of everything that we produced, we iterated and refined as much as we could and are satisfied with the outcome.
What we learned
We learnt a lot about hard work and a lot about each other. We taught each other useful tips and tricks about design that we will surely apply in our future endeavours.
What's next for ReTrend
Looking to the future, we see ReTrend being the main online shopping platform in Australia. We aim to influence people's sustainable consumer habits by bringing awareness to the unethical and unsustainable nature of fast fashion.
