Resume Tailor Extension

Inspiration

Job seekers waste hours writing personalized cover letters for every application. Resume Tailor solves this by generating professional, tailored cover letters in 30 seconds while keeping all data private and offline.

What it does

Resume Tailor is a Chrome extension that uses Chrome's Built-in AI (Gemini Nano) to automatically generate personalized cover letters. Users upload their resume once, right-click any job posting, and get a tailored cover letter in 30 seconds. It works completely offline, supports 12 languages, and exports to PDF, Word, or plain text.

How we built it

Built with React and Vite for the UI, Chrome Manifest V3 for the extension architecture, and Chrome Built-in AI (Gemini Nano) for cover letter generation. Used PDF.js and Mammoth for resume parsing, jsPDF and docx for exports. Implemented offscreen documents to access Chrome's AI APIs since service workers don't have window access. Added Gemini API as an optional fallback.

Challenges we ran into

Chrome Built-in AI requires page context but service workers can't access window.ai - solved with offscreen documents. Resume parsing was inconsistent across formats - built multi-stage pipeline with AI analysis. Initial AI output was too generic - engineered detailed prompts that extract specific names, technologies, and achievements from resumes. Context menu integration was tricky in Manifest V3 - used temporary storage with timestamps.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built one of the first extensions using Chrome Built-in AI for completely private, offline document processing. Created a tool that saves job seekers 10+ hours per week. Engineered prompts that generate specific, personalized content instead of generic templates. Achieved support for 12 languages with professional export formats.

What we learned

Prompt engineering is critical - the difference between generic and great AI output is 90% prompts. Privacy-first design is possible with Built-in AI. Chrome extension architecture in Manifest V3 requires creative solutions. Users need specificity - vague AI output is worthless. Meeting users where they are (job boards via context menu) beats making them come to you.
