Inspiration

While preparing for placements, we noticed a common problem among students: most of us apply to jobs without knowing whether our resumes actually match the role. Rejections come without feedback, leaving students confused about what skills to improve. This experience inspired us to create a solution that gives clear, honest insights into where a resume stands and what is missing for a specific job.

What it does

Resume Skill Gap Analyzer (AI) helps users understand how well their resume aligns with a particular job description. The user uploads their resume and provides the job description they are applying for. The system analyzes both, identifies matching and missing skills, generates a match score, and suggests areas where improvement is needed. This helps users prepare in a focused and meaningful way.

How we built it

We built the project using basic AI and NLP concepts. The resume and job description text are first processed to extract important skills, keywords, and role-related terms. These are then compared to understand how closely the resume matches the job requirements. Based on this comparison, a skill match score is calculated and displayed along with clear insights. The results are presented through a simple interface so users can easily understand the analysis.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was handling resumes with different formats and writing styles. Another challenge was ensuring that the analysis was not limited to exact keyword matching and could still recognize related skills. Making the output easy to understand for non-technical users while keeping the logic meaningful was also a challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a solution that addresses a real problem faced by students and job seekers. The idea focuses on practical career improvement rather than generic advice. We also succeeded in keeping the system simple, clear, and scalable for future enhancements.

What we learned

This project helped us understand how AI and NLP can be applied to solve real-world problems. We learned about resume parsing, text comparison, and building explainable AI systems. More importantly, we learned how to design a solution by thinking from a user’s perspective.

What's next for Resume Skill Gap Analyzer (AI)

In the future, we plan to enhance the system by adding learning resource recommendations, ATS-friendly resume suggestions, and personalized skill development roadmaps. We also aim to include interview preparation features and support for multiple career domains, making it a complete career guidance platform.
