Inspiration

We noticed that hiring processes are often time-consuming and biased. HR teams spend hours manually reviewing resumes, often missing strong candidates due to human error or lack of consistency. Our inspiration came from seeing how AI can transform this process — making recruitment faster, smarter, and fairer. We wanted to build a tool that not only saves time but also helps companies focus on real talent rather than keywords.

What it does

Resume Matcher is an AI-powered web app that compares job descriptions with uploaded resumes and instantly gives a match score based on skills, experience, and relevance. Recruiters can upload multiple resumes, and the system highlights top candidates within seconds. It eliminates the need for manual screening and ensures every candidate is evaluated on the same criteria. The goal is to make hiring simpler, faster, and more accurate.

How we built it

We built the project using Next.js for the frontend and backend integration. The AI engine uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to analyze job descriptions and resumes semantically — not just by matching keywords, but by understanding context. We used OpenAI embeddings and a vector similarity model to calculate match scores. The web app was deployed on Vercel for smooth performance and easy accessibility. Throughout development, we focused on creating a clean and intuitive UI that recruiters could use without any technical knowledge.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was ensuring accurate context matching. For example, distinguishing between “Java” (the language) and “JavaScript” required fine-tuning our model. We also faced deployment issues initially, especially with integrating API responses efficiently within the Next.js environment. Handling different resume formats (PDF, DOCX) was another difficulty, but we implemented preprocessing to extract and clean text data consistently.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of successfully building and deploying a functional AI-powered resume analysis tool within a short timeline. The match score feature worked accurately in most test cases, and the user interface received great feedback for its simplicity. We also learned how to integrate AI models into real-world applications while maintaining performance and reliability.

What we learned

This project taught us a lot about prompt engineering, semantic search, and AI integration in web apps. We also learned the importance of UI/UX in AI-driven platforms no matter how strong your backend is, users need a simple and intuitive interface. Teamwork played a huge role too dividing tasks between frontend, AI logic, and deployment helped us work efficiently and learn from each other.

What's next for Resume Matcher – Smart AI Hiring Assistant

We plan to enhance Resume Matcher by adding features like:

Candidate ranking dashboards for HR teams.

Chat-based insights to explain why a candidate is a good fit.

Multilingual support for international recruitment.

Integration with LinkedIn or HR systems (ATS) for direct job-posting compatibility.

Our long-term vision is to make Resume Matcher a complete AI recruitment assistant that can handle everything from screening to personalized job recommendations.
