Inspiration

Surrounded by so many restaurants everywhere in NYC, making informed dining decisions has never been more important. Having personally experienced food poisoning, I understand the critical need for transparency and accessibility to restaurant health and safety information.

What it does

RestVT is a web app that displays every NYC restaurant with violations on a interactive map. Users can click on a restaurant pin to see what specific violation(s) a restaurant has received.

How I built it

By utilizing OpenLayers and real-time public data from NYC Open Data, I can create an interactive map that allows me to plot every restaurant from the public dataset.

Challenges I ran into

Since the OpenLayers documentation uses JS, it was challenging for me to follow along as I used TypeScript to implement the application.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am proud that I was able to produce a minimum viable product before the deadline.

What we learned

I learned how to utilize OpenLayers for geographical mapping and how to utilize public API endpoints from NYC Open Data.

What's next for RestVT (Restaurant Violation Tracker)

I plan to scale this application by making it more accessible for mobile users.
