Inspiration In today’s world, safety—especially for women—remains a major concern. Many incidents of harassment, public threats, and ragging occur where victims are unable to react quickly or seek help. We were inspired to build resQtap to ensure that in such critical moments, a person is never left helpless and can get immediate assistance with just one action. What it does resQtap is an intelligent SOS-based emergency response system designed to provide quick help in dangerous situations. It supports two main use cases: Public Threats: Sends the user’s real-time location to nearby authorities such as police for immediate response. Campus Threats (Ragging): Sends alerts with location and emergency message to college security for faster local intervention. Additionally: Alerts nearby resQtap users to create a community support system Activates a hidden camera to record video without the attacker’s knowledge Stores evidence that can be used for reporting and legal purposes How we built it We developed resQtap using Android native development. GPS APIs for real-time location tracking SMS/alert system for emergency communication Camera APIs for hidden video recording Background services to ensure SOS works instantly User-based alert system for nearby notifications Challenges we ran into Ensuring SOS works quickly with minimal delay Managing background services without affecting performance Implementing hidden camera recording without user interaction Handling accurate location tracking in real-time Designing a system that adapts to different environments (public vs campus) Accomplishments that we're proud of Successfully built a dual-use case safety system Implemented hidden evidence recording feature Created a community-based alert system Designed a solution that is practical and usable in real-life emergencies What we learned Importance of building user-centric safety solutions Working with Android services, GPS, and device hardware Handling real-world constraints like network and response time Designing systems for critical situations where every second matters What's next for resQtap Add voice-based SOS trigger (hands-free activation) Enable continuous live tracking instead of one-time location Integrate smart detection for unsafe situations Cloud storage for secure evidence management Expand community network for faster nearby help
