Inspiration
Our City Chennai was affected by floods and we had power cuts for four continuous days. The mobile networks went down because there was no power for the towers and people were not able to contact their friends and family. People started wasting their battery by trying to call their friends and relatives repeatedly.
What it does
Resq notifies users when a phone gets signal by sending an sms to the number and waiting for the delivery report. Resq also keeps checking the whatsapp status of the user.
How we built it
Resq has two ways of notifying users if phones come online. a.Resq will send a text message to the people whose phone is not reachable and start checking for delivery status for the text message. As soon as the message is delivered we know that the phone is turned on. We send a text message back to the person who tried to contact them . b.Resq has a Whatsapp bot that takes in request through specific keywords. Resq then starts to check on the number and as soon as the number comes online the person who tried to contact the number is intimated .
Challenges we ran into
Whatsapp banning our mobile numbers because we used an unofficial api. Completing the project in an hour with our phone tethered to a macbook air with hardly any time to test it.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Helping my city with the knowledge I had.
What I learned
Using unofficial Whatsapp API
What's next for Resq
Resq currently uses a local provider for sending text message . We plan on making resq available for all users for any natural calamity we plan to do that using twilio .
