This video is my first attempt at screen recording, and does not contain audio. I have attempted to show what types of helpful resources people can access through this website. The dark boxes that appear at the beginning of the recording appear to be from the Zoom controls.
Inspiration:
I was wanting something that could help people in my town (Winchester, VA) find some local resources all in one place. There are a lot of publically available resources but they are scattered all over the internet!
What it does:
This website provides information about resources related to coronavirus, addiction, mental health, and more. I also especially wanted to include CCAP as a resource as I have seen what wonderful things they have done for our town.
How I built it:
HTML and some CSS using Visual Studio code, as well as git using Git Bash, and GitHub. First attempt EVER at a video submission was done using Zoom recording a screen share. Used Veed to format for YouTube with an intention to add captions since I didn't include audio. As of the time of this writing I was unable to get to the captioning portion. Uploaded video after creating a YouTube channel.
Challenges I ran into:
Getting the hang of Git!! I made several errors attempting to add my local files into the public repository. I also had a lot of difficulty figuring out how to divide myself into columns. I need to spend more time diving into CSS and what it offers beyond just changing fonts and colors. Also newly foraging into recording video, (editing for the future), and uploading.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of:
The biggest once definitely was that I was finally able to figure out how to add my local files to GitHub after quite the struggle! I have included that struggle in my ZIP submission if the judges care to see my pain. After that episode, I no longer had any problems for the duration of the time working on my project. Also, the fact that I got through managing to make a column on the site - just dividing it into columns was WAY harder for me than I anticipated.
What I learned:
Patience is definitely a virtue. Don't keep trying the same thing expecting different results. You'll often get hints in your console. Don't be afraid to look up information you're unfamiliar with!
What's next for Resources in Winchester, VA:
If it becomes polished to the point of reasonable presentation, transfer it to a more traditional domain. When really ready to show to the world, I could post the information with a link to the website in a community page, such as Facebook. I would definitely like to adjust the styling - text coloring being one, as well as physical placement of items on the page. I would also like to add some photos for interest, but was concerned about copyright issues. With more time I could investigate freely-available photos I could use. I could also consider adding a suggestion box for people to send a resource they want to add to the list, though that is out of the scope of my current skill set.
