Inspiration
We realized that email is more than just sending messages—it includes deadlines, requests, appointments, and tasks that need real-world actions. While some AI tools can summarize these emails, the user still has to do the actual work.We wanted to build something better: an agent that not only understands what needs to be done but also takes action to get it done.
What it does
Resolve is an autonomous Gemini agent that finds hidden commitments and tasks in emails, creates a plan, and carries out the actions using connected tools. It can locate relevant documents, write responses, schedule events, create tasks, and check if actions were completed. For actions that require extra care, Resolve can stop and ask the user for permission before moving forward.
How we built it
We built Resolve using Gemini and Google's Agent Development Kit (ADK). Google Cloud provides the infrastructure needed to run the agent and keep track of its progress. The agent uses tools for email, documents, calendars, and task management, allowing Gemini to choose which tools to use and how to combine them.Firestore keeps track of ongoing tasks, while Cloud Run and asynchronous services support long-running processes.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was making the agent reliable, not just smart. We had to deal with missing information, unclear requests, failed actions, and situations that required user approval. We also needed the agent to remember where it left off and continue a task instead of starting over each time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We turned email from a place to just read information into a way to take action. Resolve can spot obligations on its own, plan multi-step tasks, use various tools, and check if things were done correctly. We are especially proud of the persistent workflow design, which lets tasks continue even when the user is not actively using the app.
What we learned
We learned that building an agent is very different from building a chatbot. The hard part isn't just making the model generate answers—it's giving the model trustworthy tools, setting clear limits, managing the state of things, handling mistakes, and letting the model make decisions while still keeping the user in control.
What's next for Resolve
We want to expand Resolve beyond just email into a more general personal operations agent. Future versions will connect with email, calendars, cloud storage, messaging apps, and other services.Resolve will be able to handle long-term projects, find new obligations on its own, change plans when things change, and organize tasks across different apps.
